THE ABSTRACT NATURE OF AUDIO/VISUAL RELATIONSHIPS-MASTER’S THESIS

2024

For my Master’s thesis at Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, my goal was to produce a short music video based on my passion for working with music and audio. My thesis was based around how visuals inspired by music follow the abstract nature of music itself, since music is not a visual medium. The song I chose for this project is “The Working Hour” by Tears for Fears, one of my personal favorite songs of all time. The track is about the band’s growing pressure about becoming more of a business and wanting to break free from that tension. The visuals and narrative of the piece are inspired by my nostalgia and homesickness for my hometown in Florida, particularly for the beach, which I find to be a place of finding tranquility and peace. This theme of finding relief from stress is what inspired me to connect the song and the visuals together, as it relates to my thesis of how visuals are structured to generate cohesion with music, even when they are different in subject matter.
